The medics at Easy Med, the Marine front-line hospital just 15 miles from Panmunjom,  

판문점으로부터 15마일 떨여져있는 이지 메드 막사,

 

had seen scores of wounded men die in their months of war. 

그 곳에는 달마다 셀 수 없는 부상병들이 모여든다.

 

Under the pressure of work they had been forced to accept each death philosophically and to move efficiently, 

even impersonally, on to the next man. 

의무병들은 그들의 직무가 어떤 것임을 알기에,  죽음을 덤덤히 받아들이고 그들의 선에서 최선을 다했다.

 

But on the last night of fighting, when every soldier at the front was praying that his number would not come up now and that he would not be the last man to die.

그러나, 사투가 있었던 어젯밤, 나는 그들이 부상당한 한 병사의 생명이 꺼지질 않길 바라며 기도를 올리는 광경을 볼 수 있었다.

 

The unidentified Marine had been wounded by a Chinese mortar shell and carried through the darkness to the ambulance that took him to Easy Med. 

어느 한 해병 한 명이 중공군의 박격포탄에 맞아 부상을 입은 채로 어둠을 뚫고 실려와 이지 메드에 도착한 것이었다.

 

 

 

 

Upon his arrival, medics quickly got to work, taking every measure imaginable to keep him alive. 

그가 도착하마자 곧바로 수술에 들어갔다. 그를 살리기 위해 어떠한 수단이든 마다하지 않았다.

 

They g에이브이e him 20 pints of blood and an injection of albumin when his body went into shock. 

그가 쇼크를 일으키자 마자, 수 리터에 달하는 혈액과 알부민이 투여되었다.

 

Three doctors spent five hours bent over his hospital bed, draining his chest and removing a blood clot from his wounded right leg.

세 명의 군의관이 다섯 시간동안 수술대를 떠나지 않았다. 폐에 찬 피를 빼내고, 부상한단 다리의 곪은 상처를 제거했다.

 

The corpsmen stepped back to watch, for there was nothing more they could do but pray.

의무병들이 할 수 있는 것이라곤 그저 기도 뿐이었다.

 

 

 

 

At 3:20 in the morning, a mere seven hours before the signing of the armistice, the Marine took his final breath.

당일 새벽 세시 이십 분, 휴전 협정이 체결되기 약 일곱 시간 전, 그는 숨을 거두었다.

 

A white N에이브이y blanket was pulled over the corporal’s face and the last of Easy Med’s patients to die lay alone under a solitary light bulb.

흰 수의가 해병의 몸을 조심스레 덮었다.  그리고, 이지 메드 막사의 마지막 전사자는 외로이 홀로 빛나는 백색 전구 아래에서 삶을 끝마쳤다.
