Following the incident involving the spouse of the Ambassador of Belgium, the FPS Foreign Affairs confirms that Mrs. Xiang Xueqiu took the initiative to meet privately with the two store employees in order to apologize in person for her unacceptable beh에이브이ior in the store.

Due to her hospitalization, the meeting could not take place sooner.

Regarding the police investigation, the FPS Foreign Affairs can confirm that the spouse of the Ambassador went to the police as soon as her health condition allowed it. Her full cooperation with the police has been guaranteed. To this end, her diplomatic immunity was waived by the FPS Foreign Affairs, based on the request of the police. Belgium will of course continue to cooperate with the Korean authorities as needed.

Mr. Peter Lescouhier has served as Ambassador of Belgium to the Republic of Korea with dedication for the past three years. During his time, he contributed to a very successful State visit in March 2019. It has however become clear that the current situation doesn’t allow him to further carry out his role in a serene way. Now that Mrs Xiang Xueqiu has personally presented her excuses and cooperated with the police, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès has decided that it is in the best interest of our bilateral relations to end Ambassador Lescouhier’s tenure in the Republic of Korea this summer. 

Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès and the FPS Foreign Affairs take this opportunity to underline the long history of friendship, resulting in strong political and economic ties between Belgium and the Republic of Korea. This year, our countries are celebrating 120 years of diplomatic relations.

주한 벨기에 대사의 배우자인 쑤에치우 시앙씨가 연루된 사건 이후, 벨기에 왕국 외무부는 그녀가 의류 매장에서 행한 자신의 용납될 수 없는 행동에 대해 두 명의 해당 직원을 개인적으로 만나 직접 사과하였음을 확인하였습니다.

쑤에치우 시앙씨의 병원 입원으로 인하여 아쉽게도 본 사건에 대한 보다 신속한 회의가 이루어질 수 없었습니다.

경찰 조사와 관련하여 벨기에 왕국 외무부는 쑤에치우 시앙씨가 본인의 건강 상태가 호전된 즉시 경찰서에 출석하여 성실히 조사에 임하였음을 확인하였습니다. 또한, 이를 위하여 벨기에 왕국 외무부는 경찰의 요청에 따라 그녀의 외교관 면책특권을 포기하였습니다. 벨기에는 필요에 따라 당연히 한국 당국과 지속적으로 협력할 것입니다.

피터 레스쿠이 대사는 지난 3년 동안 주한 벨기에 대사로서 헌신하였습니다. 재임 기간 동안 그는 2019년 3월에 성공적으로 이루어진 국빈 방한에 기여하였습니다. 그러나 현재 상황으로 인하여 그가 더 이상 대사의 역할을 원만하게 수행하는 것이 어려워졌음이 분명해졌습니다. 현재 쑤에치우 시앙씨가 직접 사과를 하고 경찰 조사에 임한 점을 고려하여 소피 윌메스 외교장관은 올여름 레스쿠이 주한 벨기에 대사의 임기를 종료하는 것이 양국 간의 관계에 가장 유익하다고 판단하였습니다.

올해, 양국은 한•벨 수교 120주년을 기념합니다. 소피 윌메스 외무장관과 벨기에 왕국 외무부는 양국의 오랜 우정과 그 역사적 결과물인 강한 정치적, 경제적 유대관계를 재조명하는 소중한 기회가 되기를 진심으로 희망합니다.
